Helping achieve positive socio-economic change in Sub-Saharan Africa

Partly through our efforts, the following have been achieved in sub-saharan Africa, as reported in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) 2006 report by the United Nations,

  • In sub-saharan Africa, the poverty rate has declined marginally.
  • Generally, increasing number of children in sub-saharan Africa are surviving their first years of life.
  • In sub-saharan Africa, prevention efforts are proving successful in some places.

Reproductive Health Program Support Services (RHPSS) Project

(Jan 2004 - December 2005)

Changing the lives of womenThis project implemented by MSA supported the government of Nigeria's policy to slow the population growth rate and support ICPD goals by increasing the effectiveness of SRH organizations and programs. This project delivered a range of technical support services to respond to needs of SRH organizations and programs, especially those funded by Packard Foundation.

In particular the project offered assistance in strategic management, monitoring and evaluation, and development of tailored SRH program management systems, to improve the effectiveness of SRH programs.


Reproductive Health Organizational Effectiveness (RHOE) Project

(July 2006 - June 2008)

MSA implemented this project which supported the government of Nigeria's policy to slow the country's population growth by increasing the effectiveness of organizations in developing, implementing and evaluating SRHR programs.

The project strengthened the local (Nigerian) capacity for management development, and for training and technical assistance tailored to the circumstances and needs of SRHR organizations/programs. By addressing these management development challenges, the RHOE project implemented by MSA has been enhancing the overall capacity of SRHR organizations to achieve organizational effectiveness and sustainable impact.


Strategic Advocacy Management (SAM) Project
(March 2007 - February 2007)

Participants at an MSA-organised seminarPrior to the implementation of this project by MSA, organizations in Nigeria implementing sexual and reproductive health and (SRHR) needed considerable support and assistance to build and strengthen their overall management abilities, in addition to technical capabilities.

Since implementation, this project has supported implementation of the national family life and HIV/AIDS education (FLHE) curriculum by improving the institutional, managerial and technical capacity of the NGOs, government institutions and CBOs engaged in sexuality education programs at the national level and in the six priority states of Borno, Cross River, Enugu, Kano, Lagos and Plateau.


Project and Financial Management Course for ENHANSE partners
:

MSA in response to a request from ENHANSE designed and facilitated a 6-day training on project and financial management course for the organization's project partners. The goal of the training was strengthened capacity of ENHANSE project partners to monitor and evaluate projects with the specific short term outcomes of increased knowledge in monitoring and evaluation broadly, increased capacity to develop and implement M&E plans, and enhanced capacity to manage data for decision making.

The 6-day training was attended by participants drawn from several partner organizations in Nigeria. The training positively impacted on ENHANSE project partners as better project and financial management skills were acquired.


Supporting Ghana's Response to HIV/AIDS:

The executive director of MSA International, Marc A. Okunnu, Sr., led a two-person team to conduct a functional assessment of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) Secretariat. The purpose of the assessment was to strengthen the GAC secretariat's capacity to fulfil its technical and administrative functions. The team conducted a systematic assessment of the GAC Secretariat's current institutional set-up, management systems, decision-making processes, and staff capacity, and came up with recommendations to enhance GAC's effectiveness as the lead institution for coordinating and mobilizing the Ghana national response to HIV/AIDS.


Technical Support for Southern Sudan:

The southern sudan office of UNFPA approved MSA-Ghana's proposal to develop a training of trainers (TOT) manual and guide for populations disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) in southern Sudan. The materials will help meet the training needs of ex-combatants to support HIV prevention and mitigation interventions in south Sudan. The consultancy to be undertaken largely on site in south Sudan will be organized by MSA Ghana with technical backstopping from MSA international in London.


Institutional Capacity Building in Uganda

As consultant to the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, one of the four partners in the CORE Initiatives Project in Uganda, the executive director of MSA international, Marc A. Okunnu, Sr,continued to support institutional capacity building of the Uganda ministry of gender, labor and social development to lead, manage, and coordinate Uganda national response to OVC issues. In the third in the series of technical support visits to Uganda, Marc focused on supporting development and institutionalism of the national OVC Secretariat within the MGSLSD.


Developing Effective Reproductive Health in Liberia

MSA provided technical assistance to Family Planning Association in Liberia (FPAL) to develop plans for strengthening and providing sexual and reproductive health information, education and services for its program year 2008. Funded by the Africa Region of International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), the technical assistance activity is part of a broad regional program capacity building initiative developed in 2006 with MSA's assistance. With the support from MSA-Ghana country team Leader, FPAL developed the 2008 annual program/budget featuring projects and activities in family planning, reproductive health and HIV/AIDS.


MSA experts have impacted on Regional Health Development in Africa

As individual consultants who have worked on diverse health-related projects in various African countries, MSA experts have undoubtedly impacted on regional health development in Africa. The MSA executive director has particularly led several SRH and HIV/AIDS projects in the broader Africa region. MSA board members and technical associates have successfully delivered high-profile SRH projects in Africa and even beyond.


MSA Annual Reports Demonstrate our Achievements

Over the years, MSA has championed and promoted strategic planning for establishing and strengthening the basis for institutional capacity building and organizational development. Many of the leading and largest SRH NGOs in Nigeria have sought and benefited from MSA assistance in this area. Our annual reports record results we have achieved over a period.
